A Century in Flux

A long-term exhibition, A Century in Flux: Highlights from the Barjeel Art Foundation, at the Sharjah Art Museum features a selection of key modernist paintings, sculptures and mixed media artworks from the Barjeel Art Foundation collection. Curated by Salwa Mikdadi with Barjeel curators Mandy Merzaban and Karim Sultan, the exhibition covers a century of artistic production in the Arab region and its diaspora, beginning from the late 19th Century to the late 20th Century. The exhibition will remain on display for the next five years through an agreement between the Sharjah Museums Authority and Barjeel Art Foundation.

For this long term exhibition I  not only handled the full design and production, I also hired and managed a graphic designer, Moylin Yuan, who I worked with very closely to create all the collateral for the exhibition – labels, posters, flyers, banners, etc. The location was challenging since it was a very long hallway with rooms along the sides. I wanted to break up the space so I fabricated high walls that divided the galleries and made the space feel more intimate. I also worked extensively with the lighting to ensure we had the best results. The showcases I designed were museum grade and allowed for humidity control.  Furthermore I was tasked with creating a space to introduce the visitor to Barjeel Art Foundation. For this, I designed a bespoke resource room and custom made wall paneling, a corian marble table, and seating.
